Art that Revives Lost Whimsy, Wonder & Wanderlust

We live in a world computed by tight structures and square boxes.

While technology has accelerated major break-through across industries, it has left very little room for pondering and wondering.

We have replaced afternoons of aimless exploration and serendipity with a must-see list curated from social media.

We have lost our ability to seek beyond binary narratives and find comfort in nuance, in multiple truths rather than one singular truth.

Our minds are consistently hijacked by algorithms built on our digital footprint. We do not wonder and wander outside of the digital sphere.

My art work explores our multifaceted humanness

Rediscovering who we are beyond algorithms

Through my brushstrokes (sometimes soft and long, sometimes short and stark), colour palettes and composition, I invite you to whimsically wonder & wander through a world of binaries coexisting - softness coexisting with strength, fast coexisting with slow, western philosophy coexisting with eastern philosophy.

Technology isn't the enemy however we need spaces where multi-narratives unfold.

Nature is the Greatest Artist

I'm consistently inspired by Mother Nature; she offers endless wonders to wander.

Whether it is her colour palettes or patterns, nature reminds us that opposites can coexist harmoniously.

The calm, serene sea suddenly erupts into stormy, rough waves, then fold back into calmness. Grey heavy clouds disrupted by cracks of glorious and bright sunlight.

My art process borrows her ebb and flow by allowing colour and composition to unfold without a rigid structure.

There is a relationship during the process between myself and the painting as the composition starts to unravel itself, as the colours palette forms through the mixing of primary colours.

I'm also inspired by my father's black and white analog photographs.

While he was at university in Shanghai, he developed his own analog photos in a makeshift darkroom. Through his photos, I developed an instinct for composition and light and dark values, shaped by images that documented a nation rising.

Circulating Back to Art

I started painting from the age of three. My mum true to her Shanghainese nature hoped that I would become a doctor. So my aunties recalled she brought doctor toys to encourage me into the practice. However, I have a fear of blood, so I was enrolled into art school instead .

In university, I pivoted to drama and studied at Central School of Speech and Drama, then landed a position at a museum afterwards.

While I spent nearly a decade in corporate, my art has always been apart of my life, so I'm circulating back to my origin as a creative.

My main medium is acrylics though I do dabble in watercolours from time to time.
