There's something almost theatrical about the Guard outside Buckingham Palace — the scarlet tunic, the bearskin, the stillness held for hours at a time. It's one of those sights that's become shorthand for London itself, even to Londoners who walk past it without a second glance. I wanted to paint that red against the grey of the city, the discipline of it, the little bit of pageantry that survives in the middle of an ordinary day.

I love that London keeps traditions like this going, half ceremony, half street corner.
