This has to be the most recognisable door in the UK, probably the world. We seem to change Prime Ministers quicker than I change my paintbrush water, but this door remains exactly the same. I never mix black straight from the tube for this one — I layer ultramarine blue with burnt umber, two colours that cancel each other out to create a deeper, richer black than any single black paint can give you, so the door holds its own against the ordinary grey brickwork around it.
I love that you could walk past it and, for a second, forget what it is.
