Richmond Park still catches people off guard — that there are wild deer, hundreds of them, grazing within the M25. I wanted to paint that strange overlap of city and wilderness, the deer unbothered by joggers and dog walkers a few feet away, the light doing something softer than it does anywhere else in London. The greens are built from yellow ochre and viridian rather than straight from the tube, mixed at different ratios across the canvas so the light shifts naturally through the grass instead of looking flat.
I love that you can stand there and, for a moment, forget you're still in the city at all.
